IBEW Local 640 Member & Applicant FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful answers for members, applicants, CW/CE workers, dispatch questions, benefits, apprenticeship questions, and online account access.

Please read carefully. Many dispatch, book, login, and bidding issues happen because a required step was missed. Important deadlines and requirements are highlighted throughout this FAQ.
What is “The Book” and what does “Signing The Books” mean?

The Book is the physical registry for workers who are out of work.

  • “Signing The Books” means coming down in person and registering yourself for the out-of-work list.
  • This allows you to log in to the online system, see available jobs, and bid for jobs.
What does “Bid For A Job” mean?

After you have turned in your application in person, completed your assessment, turned in your hours, and signed the book, you may be able to bid for available jobs.

  • Once you sign the book, you can see jobs available in your classification.
  • Bidding for a job means logging in online, finding a job that fits your classification, and applying for that job.
  • After applying, expect a phone call from Dispatch the next day.
Job assignments are given in the order of who signed the book first, not who submitted their bid first.
Why can’t I bid for a job? Why am I banned from Dispatch?

You may be unable to bid for one of the following reasons:

  • You fell off the book because you did not resign between the 10th and the 16th.
  • You may be unclassified. This can happen if you were terminated from the apprenticeship and want to become a CW/CE.
  • You may need to wait until the next CW/CE Committee meeting to be classified from Apprentice to CW/CE.
  • You may be ineligible to bid if you must see the CW/CE Committee or the Code of Excellence Committee.
If you must see a committee, you will need to wait until the next committee meeting before you can bid for a job call.
Did you receive my application?

If you submitted an application on the website and did not assign it to a specific organizer, please allow 24 to 48 hours for someone to contact you.

After that, questions about your application can be sent to:

I failed a drug test. What now?
  • If it was for medical marijuana, there is no IBEW penalty for that drug test. You can go back on the bottom of the book.
  • If it is not a safety-sensitive job, the contractor may choose to keep you on the job and have you sign paperwork stating you will not use marijuana on company time and will not operate heavy equipment.
  • For anything other than medical marijuana, you will need to contact the EAP program. This process can take a minimum of two weeks or more and may require speaking to a psychiatrist three times.
  • You will also need to complete a return-to-work test.
The return-to-work test must come back absolutely clean.
I applied for the apprenticeship. Now what?

Please refer to the apprenticeship website for the next step. IBEW Local 640 does not have access to your apprenticeship application or its status.

I’ve received a strike. What is that?

Strikes are given to people on the books when they do not bid for a job they are qualified for, leaving the call unfilled.

If you receive 3 strikes, you will be removed from the book and will need to resign the book in person.
When are calls coming in for this project?

Dispatch receives calls for projects the day before they are posted. We do not know which jobs are coming down the pipeline or when large hirings will happen.

Contractors put calls in when they choose to, and we do not control when they submit calls.

We do not know in advance when the project you are asking about is putting calls in.
I am a CW2. How soon can I get to work?

Contractors put calls in when they need manpower. They may or may not put calls in for CW2 workers.

Keep checking the online bidding system to see what job calls are coming in.

What is “Resign”?

You must resign the book every month between the 10th and the 16th.

  • If you are on time, you may be able to resign remotely over the phone.
  • If you are late, you will have to resign in person.
